As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, many of us start thinking about the upcoming holiday season. If you’ve been considering a way to boost your confidence and achieve the figure you’ve always wanted, fall might be the perfect time to explore a tummy tuck procedure. At Marvel Cosmetic Surgery, we understand the transformative power of this popular body contouring surgery, and we’re here to guide you through the process.
Why Choose a Tummy Tuck This Fall?
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is an excellent option for those looking to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while tightening the underlying muscles. This is a more invasive procedure to help redefine a person’s abdomen and provide a sleeker profile. Seeking a surgical treatment in the fall can be beneficial due to a variety of reasons, including but not limited to the following.
- Cooler weather makes recovery more comfortable
- You’ll have time to heal before the holiday festivities
- Bulkier fall and winter clothing can help conceal any post-surgery swelling
- You’ll be ready to unveil your new look in time for warmer weather
Setting Yourself Up for Success While Preparing for Your Tummy Tuck
Proper tummy tuck preparation is crucial for achieving optimal results. Some patients may have a different set of restrictions or recommendations based on overall health, current lifestyle, and other factors, but these 4 facts tend to remain across the board.
- Achieve a stable weight before surgery
- Stop smoking and avoid alcohol in the weeks leading up to your procedure
- Arrange for help during your initial recovery period
- Prepare your home for a comfortable recovery
During your consultation with board-certified surgeon Dr. Allison Laffoon, you will receive a list of detailed pre-operative instructions to ensure you’re fully prepared for your tummy tuck journey.
What to Expect During the Tummy Tuck Procedure
During your tummy tuck, Dr. Laffoon will make an incision along the lower abdomen, remove excess skin and fat, and tighten the abdominal muscles. The procedure typically takes 2-3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Our state-of-the-art facilities and accredited team ensure that you receive the highest quality care throughout your surgery.
Recovering After a Tummy Tuck Procedure
Understanding the tummy tuck recovery process is essential for setting realistic expectations. You may have a few variations in your recovery process depending on your lifestyle or overall health, but generally you can expect to be in the following stages during your recovery. Everyone’s recovery is unique, and Dr. Laffoon will provide personalized guidance throughout your healing process.
First Two Weeks
Your first couple of weeks are going to be very laid-back. You will likely feel a bit sore and be encouraged to take medication to alleviate any pain. Minimal movement will be best in order to give your body the best chance to focus on recovery. It’s highly advised that you arrange for someone to stay with you and take care of you during this time.
Weeks Three and Four
After recovering for a few weeks, you will likely have an appointment to check in with Dr. Laffoon. She will confirm that you’re in a position where you can gradually return to light activities, such as going for a short walk. You are still not allowed to do anything strenuous and certainly not allowed to lift anything. For more involved movement, it’s best if you have someone else doing the work.
Month Two
About four weeks post-op, you can likely return to work so long as your job is not very strenuous. If you spend a lot of time standing at your job, a note can be provided (if necessary) to have you use a chair during your shift. If your job is usually very physical or includes any lifting, you will be asked to refrain from returning to normal activities for a few more weeks.
Weeks Six to Eight
After about a month or two, your body will be recovered enough that you can begin returning to normal function, including some light exercise. What you can and cannot do at this stage will be assessed depending on how your recovery is going so far, and may fluctuate. It’s important to remember that you are not fully healed yet and should not put your body beyond what it can handle. Slowly ramp up your activity level over the next few weeks to give your body a chance to rebuild muscle mass and finish recovering.
Three to Six Months
At about three months, your body should be completely healed and ready for usual work and life movements. You may still be experiencing some swelling, which is normal and should fade in no more than an additional three months (six months from surgery).
