What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is an invasive surgical procedure that shapes the labia by removing excess tissue. Though it has been around for many years, an increase in the popularity of pubic waxing and hair removal has coincided with the increased requests to have this surgery.
Am I a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty
True indicators for ideal candidates can be found in the size of the labia minora (the inner lips). There are some women who find that the swelling or size hinders their ability to wear tampons and also brings about chafing that causes discomfort. Women seeking labiaplasty might find the lengths of their labia walls vastly different and may desire a cosmetic change to even them out. While these issues can sometimes be hereditary, some women might find they experience these issues after childbirth. Any functional abnormalities that interfere with normal activities are easily rectifiable through this procedure.
How to Prepare for Labiaplasty
During your consultation, we will review your medical history and discuss any medications you take. You may be advised to stop taking certain blood-thinning medications, supplements, or anti-inflammatory drugs that could increase the risk of bleeding.
It is also essential to arrange for time off work and daily activities, as you must rest after the procedure. On the day of the procedure, wear loose-fitting clothing and ensure you have a comfortable space prepared at home for recovery.
The Labiaplasty Procedure
Female genital cosmetic surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, typically under deep sedation, depending on the complexity of the case. The surgery usually takes about one to two hours.
During the procedure, we perform aesthetic labia minora reduction by trimming excess tissue from the labia minora to achieve the desired size and shape. Different surgical techniques are used during labiaplasty surgery; the method chosen will depend on your female genital appearance and the amount of unwanted tissue.
Once the excess tissue is removed, we use dissolvable sutures to close the incisions, ensuring minimal scarring and natural-looking results. Patients are then monitored briefly before being discharged to recover at home.
Recovery After Labiaplasty
After you undergo labiaplasty, you can expect mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which usually subside within a few weeks. Applying cold compresses and keeping the area elevated can help reduce swelling. Most patients are advised to take at least a few days off work and avoid strenuous activities for about four to six weeks. Recovery also requires six weeks of no vaginal penetration, including tampons.
While initial results will be noticeable within a few weeks, final results may take a few months as swelling fully resolves. With proper care, labiaplasty provides long-lasting, natural-looking results that enhance function and appearance.
