Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is a popular cosmetic procedure that uses suction to reduce excess fat deposits between the skin and muscle. This technique works well on stubborn fat deposits despite a strict diet and active physical procedures. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but rather a body contouring procedure.

Liposuction surgery sculpts the following areas of your body:
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Back
  • Cheeks, chin, and neck
  • Chest and breast
  • Calves
  • Hips
  • Inner knee
  • Thighs
  • Upper arm and axilla

What is Lipo360?

Lipo360 is an all-inclusive Liposuction procedure that is used to contour and shape the midsection, 360 degrees around. The possible areas for treatment are the upper and lower abdominals, the flanks on both sides, and the lower and mid-back.

Am I A Good Candidate?

Those who already live a healthy lifestyle, but cannot seem to get rid of trouble spots in the midsection are great candidates for Lipo360. It is important to remember that Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but rather a body contouring procedure. Patients who still have a significant amount of weight to lose are not good candidates for Lipo360.  We ask patients to have a BMI that is under 34. Those who are close to their goal weight and want to remove targeted areas of fat to contour and shape their body are ideal candidates.

When to Consider Liposuction

  • Localized areas of fat deposits are disproportionate to the rest of your body.
  • A desire for a sleeker contour in certain areas of the body.

Liposuction Procedure

During a consultation, one of our doctors will review and discuss treatment options and the steps of the procedure. They will ask about the patient’s expectations to create a unique and customized treatment plan. An examination of the patient’s skin type will also occur.

Our Board Certified Surgeon will inject a large amount of diluted local anesthetic solution into the area to reduce pain and bruising. We will then make a small incision in the skin and insert a cannula (tube), attached to either a high-pressure vacuum suction or to a syringe system. The fat is loosened from surrounding tissue by moving the cannula back and forth and is then removed or vacuumed from the body with the suction device.

Liposuction Recovery Time

Since this surgery does not involve large incisions and extensive cutting, pain is minimal to moderate and is controlled with oral medication. Most patients can move around immediately following surgery, but rest is recommended for the initial postoperative period. Patients are usually able to return to normal activities within a week, although vigorous physical activity is discouraged for several weeks. Some swelling and discoloration can occur but usually disappears within a month. Scars from liposuction, which fade significantly with time, are, for the most part, inconspicuous because they are made within the natural creases of the body whenever possible.

It is important to remember that liposuction surgery, while not a cure for generalized obesity, is an excellent procedure that can benefit those who want to remove unsightly fat from localized areas. Patients who choose this plastic surgery procedure, however, must have realistic expectations about the outcome and understand that final results may not be apparent for up to one year.
