Breast Reduction
What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure removing excess breast fat, tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion to the body. Additionally, the procedure alleviates the discomfort of overly large breasts.
Many women are unhappy with their large breasts. They can cause discomfort while exercising, neck and back pain, or skin irritation. They can also prevent you from wearing the clothes you would like to wear. A breast reduction in Nashville, TN can reduce this pain and give you a more proportional look.
Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?
Many candidates for breast reduction surgery have heavy, sagging breasts that are large or disproportionate for their body size. Others have one breast that is noticeably larger than the other. Age and overall health are also factors to consider when determining if a patient is a good candidate. During your initial consultation, one of our surgeons will discuss your cosmetic concerns and goals.
Candidates for this procedure are women who:
- Out of proportion breasts relative to body size
- Skin irritation beneath the breasts
- Experience shoulder indentations or back and shoulder pain from bra straps
- Breast size restricts activity
How to Prepare for Breast Reduction Surgery
Before receiving a breast reduction, patients must schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified cosmetic surgeons. They will assess your medical history, perform a physical examination, and discuss your concerns to develop a personalized surgical plan. Breast reduction costs can also be explained in detail regarding the specifics of your procedure.
It’s also important for patients to be in good overall health at the time of their breast surgery. Smoking and the use of blood-thinning medications or herbal supplements must be avoided for at least six weeks prior to surgery.
The Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure performed in our surgery center in either Hopkinsville, Kentucky; Nashville, or Tullahoma, Tennessee. It requires monitored anesthesia care with local anesthetic medicine and takes about three to four hours. During your surgical reduction procedure, your surgeon will make an incision to remove excess breast tissue. Excess fat will also be removed as needed. They will then use breast lift techniques to move the glandular tissue and nipple to restore the shape of the breast. Excess skin will be carefully trimmed away to effectively tighten and lift the breasts, giving them a youthful contour. Drains may possibly be placed in the treatment area at that time to remove any excess fluid.
Breast Reduction Recovery
The most common side effects are swelling and numbness or sensitivity of the nipples and breast skin. These symptoms are temporary and will improve over time. The healing process depends on the techniques used during the procedure. You will need to wear a supportive sports bra for about two months to aid in healing. Breast reduction recovery time varies but most patients should be back to normal daily activities in about two weeks. Heavy lifting and other strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 2 months.
